Sony's PlayStation 4 play in 3D Blu-rays
Sony has added 3D Blu-ray playback support as part of its latest PlayStation 4 firmware update. Earlier this month, Microsoft revealed that the upcoming August update for Xbox One will also introduce 3D support. Both consoles have lacked the ability to play 3D Blu-rays since launch. After being a big proponent of stereoscopic experiences (both in movies and games) during the previous generation, Sony has dragged its feet in bringing 3D to the PS4. And it's not terribly hard to understand why: TV manufacturers aren't so enthusiastic about the technology anymore and have now set their sights on 4K and curved designs to stand out at electronics stores. But it's doubtful that adding playback support took up much of Sony's time. For all we know, it may have been a direct knee-jerk reaction to Microsoft's plans. But we're glad to see the addition, as there are still some truly fantastic 3D Blu-rays out there — even if the market for them has fallen way short of industry expectations.
